What do I do with a BHAG? (if you're unfamiliar with a BHAG
So you have a BHAG, now what do you do with it? First of all, see if it really
meets the qualifications of being BIG, HAIRY AND AUDACIOUS. Is it a quantum leap
forward? Is it not limited by what you think is possible? Remember, it is the
seed of great accomplishments. When you truly establish your BHAG, your
subconscious works on it until it becomes reality. It can’t be too big, too
hairy or too audacious. In fact, IT DOESN’T TAKE ANY MORE TIME TO DREAM BIG THAN
TO DREAM LITTLE so make sure you’re dreaming big. In fact, if you don’t think it
is big enough, stop right here. Do not read any further until you have made it
bigger, hairier and more audacious.
So how do you make that BHAG reality? It starts within your mind. Write down
your BHAG and put it where you will see it first thing every morning when you
wake up and every evening when you go to bed. When you see it, read it out loud.
This begins to program your subconscious to work behind the scenes on your BHAG.
The more you think about it, the more you see it, the more it becomes a reality
and the more likely you are to accomplish it.
Then, once a week, establish five things you can do every day to move towards
the fulfillment of your BHAG. For example, if your BHAG is six Gatherings a
month and two new team members a month for six months, then your first day might
include the following activities:
1. spend fifteen minutes organizing customer list
2. call customers for an hour or until I schedule one Gathering
3. set up potential Consultant list
4. call potential Consultants for an hour or until I schedule one business
5. celebrate my successes and evaluate my challenges
Subsequent days could include the previous day’s activities and some might be
1. prepare for this week’s Gatherings
2. host coach
3. call customers to check for reorders or to invite to scheduled Gatherings in
4. present business opportunity
5. meet with my team
One or two days a week, you should just spend some time planning for the next
As you faithfully go through this exercise, several things will begin to happen.
First of all, you’ll recognize that you are slowly moving towards accomplishing
your BHAG. Secondly, after about thirty days or so of doing this EVERY DAY, you
will start having creative ideas to do something more, something different,
something that will propel forward at a very rapid pace. You may question those
ideas. You may wonder “where did THIS come from?” But, if you look carefully,
you will discover that these ideas come from the subconscious part of your brain
that has been programmed to help you accomplish your goals.
It is VITAL that you act on those ideas. Those ideas will propel you forward at
an amazing rate. They will take you and your business to new heights of
accomplishment and personal fulfillment.
Numerous stories have been told of people who had an idea but did not have the
courage to act. Then, several months later, those people heard of someone else
who had the same idea and acted on it. Those “someone elses” became very
successful while the other people just remember that they had the idea first but
they were afraid to act.
If you will act on the ideas and continue to daily rehearse your BHAG, your BHAG
will become reality.
Now that you know what to do…. Will you do it? Will you set the BHAG? Will you
discipline yourself to see it become reality? Will you experience the magic of
